Abou Lagraa

choreographer
dancer

The first contact with this charismatic choreographer/dancer we’ve made during the dance festival Dance Salad in Houston Texas in spring 2007. Abou accepted our invitation and as a guest to 420people performed his solo Ou Trase at the Archa Theatre in Prague.
Besides „the stage“ we’ve used Abou‘s short stay in Prague also for series of workshops. The students of the University of Arts in Prague had the opportunity to come closer to Abou’s style in two intensive lessons.

He began to dance at the age of 16 in his hometown, and then attended the Conservatoire National Régional in Lyon, later attended Lyon’s Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse.
From 1993 to 1996, he danced with Rui Horta and became his assistant for a project at the Gulbenkian in Lisbon.
Over the course of 1997, he worked with Denis Plassard, Lionel Hoche and Robert Poole.
In February 1997 he founded the Compagnie La Baraka, along with Aurélia Picot.
In December 1998 he was awarded the second prize in contemporary dance at the Concours International de la Ville de Paris (City of Paris International Competition).
He created for Lyon’s Biennale de la Danse, CCN-Ballet de Lorraiine, in St Pölten (Austria) for ABC Dance Company, recently also for the Ballet de l’Opera de Paris..
Since 2002, the Compagnie La Baraka has worked in close collaboration with the “Les Rencontres Chorégraphiques de Carthage” in Tunis and also with the Centre Méditerranéen de Danse Contemporaine.
Abou Lagraa and his dancers also give courses. The company is hosted every year in Tunis; and will be in residency again in 2008 to prepare for its next creation.
In January 2004, Abou Lagraa and his company were awarded a four-year residency at Bonieu Scène Nationale d’Annecy.
Abou Lagraa, has been the subject of several television reports and captations.
